Fwd: Late Carlton Figg

May 21, 2010.
Hi John,
Yes, I'd seen this once after Carlton's death. My blog caption should have stated 'Late' Carlton Figg's daughter. He died in Nov 2008.

George

You will find Carlton Figg giving Sean Auckland a bit of curry  at this blog. You may have come across it  - have a look see or a read see!

Sean, what planet are you from ?! I have been to Calcutta (lived there for over a year), and I have witnessed the misery of the poor Anglo-Indian. If, as you point out, there are funds available, nothing is going to the poor Anglo. But, as Frank Anthony once very famously pointed out, "The poor will always be with us — let us, instead, focus on creating an elite community". Get the great man"s drift ?

150th Anniversary- 1995

Carlton Figg's daughter

This pic of Mr TN Seshan with Brenda Figg of The Pioneer appeared on the front page of Hindi daily Swantantra Bharat . Senior journalists were disturbed after Brenda 'apologised' for their aggressive heckling of the Chief Election Commissioner. I cannot remember the year (1996) so I'm not sure whether he was still in office at the time. Swatantra Bharat was the sister daily of The Pioneer. Carlton Figg who rose from sub editor and reporter to become News Editor of The Pioneer and later the first News Editor of Northern India Patrika , at its inception at Lucknow, died in Nov 2008. Besides trying to breathe life into The National Herald in Lucknow, in its dying months, he also edited two eveningers that didn't get the right financial or readership support to help them survive. His column Around the Town was written under the pen name, Jaywalker.

Sat 15 May 10

The Mart

Pics all taken Sat 15 May 2010 when the sun had reached its zenith, the Lat almost like a giant sundial. Everyone must know that the sundial was stolen from the garden several years ago perhaps for its metal. Some pics show the rundown condition of portions of the building - the gym, the office, the bull's ring area, the toilet and swimming pool area. The little boy who appears in some of the pics is my grandson Darren Hopkins, son of Warren, son of Derek, both of whom had been Martinians. While we were there the workers were recovering a water tank that had toppled down the bund.

Bull's Ring Sat 15 May 2010

The original stone slabs from the bull's ring have gone except the straight portion where I discovered J.Hunt and RW Simeons names still.

Swimming team

This pic is being repeated for obvious reasons! However, I hope someone corrects me if I'm wrong but I feel David Wright is the head showing above Walter Johnson and the guy indicated as Wright is a McFarland, Cornwallis House, whose father was in the PAC or police???

Souvenirs acquired in 1968.
In Dec '68 Ma'am Towning, cleared out her store, stacked with old crockery and put them on sale for boys interested in souvenirs. I bought the bowl and coffee cup. I also had a milk cup which I'd acquired by other means. However, it broke. Perhaps, some old Martinian might remember when the coffee cup was in use. It was before my time.

The hungry eat!

Sunday breakfast: Woman and 5 kids feast on discarded leftovers.

Fwd: John, thanks!

May 8, 2010.

Pics taken this morning from the Lat.
All told with the wall separating the Lat from the rest might be a blessing in disguise. I would expect the Lat, long neglected and left to vandals who have actually carried away all the bricks from the surrounding wall, to be repaired. Besides with the attention from the state administration vandals will be kept out.
One pic shows the second floor newly added to Sykes hall.
This is hilarious. I like the Hindi.

Dam cheek! I saw that outrageous suggestion - came from one of the "Sharpes" in Perth. Keep-up the good reporting. There have been many other Shepherd reporters who originated in Lucknow [James Shepherd Snr {Time Magazine}hailed from Lal Bagh - he was related to your lot of Shepherds too] Disregard the the balsa wood arrows slung from weak stringed bows. Talk is cheap. बात सुस्ता है - PARTICULARLY THE BAAING OF SHEEP!

Servants strike work

In 1966 we at La Martiniere experienced the first servants strike. The biggest problem was the kitchen and dining hall. But it turned out fine as volunteers from each house came forward, I being one for Cornwallis, and the serving and washing up was handled successfully, perhaps leading to the failure of the strike. A couple of the kitchen staff (cooks) remained loyal. Major and Ma'am Towning later took us all to a circus (Gemini) that happened to be in town at the time. There has subsequently been unrest among this section several times.
The strike that started on Thursday May 6 has several demands, one being pension for retiring servants. Teachers till now are only entitled to it.
Food for the boarders and others was arranged through a caterer, Kazmi (?), an ex-Martinian in the business.
Pic of the servants sitting on 'dharna' near the dhobi ghat (Martinpurwa). The cops were around in sizeable number to prevent them from crowding the gateways where such sit-ins are considered most suitable.

Saturday morning (May 8) I asked a servant about their hartal and he said it had fizzled out. I guess some pressure was brought to bear on a few of them and so the endeavour failed.

A few more days!

May 6, 2010 morning. The iron work is almost complete as the concreting advances from the Jiamau side. If it's any consolation, a gate will be installed on the bund in front of the steps. I wasn't pleased by a comment on the possibility of my pics being 'photoshopped' or morphed or the question being put to someone whether my claims are true.
