New ideas at work

Monday Dec 13, 2010
There seems to be some new ideas at work at the lake. I was surprised to find a few metres of the drain being built had been dug up and what looks like another outlet being dug accross the lake and, maybe straight into the Gomti????

The Merry Weather!

Sunday, Dec 5, 2010.

Sunday morning marked the end of the annual Lucknow festival with the flower exhibition at the Botanical Gardens, the Tonga/kharkara race starting from the Babu Stadium and ending at the Hardinge Bridge, commonly know as the Pucca Pul, the vintage car rally from the Christ Church gas station and ending in the Cantonment at the Mohammad Bagh Club going via the newly developed area of Gomtinagar and shooting competition at the Police Lines. The car rally and tonga race drew a large crowd at least to the starting points.

Re: Concretizing!

Thanks George,
Your photographs make me feel close to the works taking place around the Lart. If the intention is to create a lake around the Lart and a treed park on the vacant land as suggested by Vice-Chairman LDA Mukesh Meshram the outlook from the parapet above the library will be stunning. I know there are many old boys that feel nostalgic about the way the grounds were in the 50's and 60's. However when I look at the changes that have taken place in Lucknow in the 50 odd years since I have been away I can see why there are moves to make more use of the land that surrounds the Martiniere. If this land can be, as suggested, be set aside as Public Open Space to be used by the citizens of Lucknow rather than for commercial and residential purposes I am sure our founder will be well pleased.
Regards,
Roley.

Saleem Bhai's kababs

Nov 30,2010.
Saleem bhai's kabab and parathas have never been written about like the famous Tundey of Aminabad. However, everyone I know loves Saleem's preparation. His kababs have been carried to Mysore, Pune and Calcutta.

Fwd: THE GREAT MAULING!

Nov 25, 2010.
It's said somethings have to get worse before they get better. The Lucknow municipal people have not only dug up the whole road and what was left of the pavements but now the verandah right from Devi Radiograms (shop) right past the shops in the covered area to put down a gas pipe. The pic shows the Bata verandah.

Billy's Residency visit

Billy Nestor had a couple of pre-Independence Day photographs taken in the Lucknow Residency but, unfortunately, I didn't get them copied to use on my blog. The pic of him here was taken on his last visit to the Residency. He said he hadn't been here since his school days.

Re: Sorry!

Thanks for the pictures George.
Vern and I were in the Martiniere between 1946 and 1954. I left in 1951. So I am pleased that you knew that there were Sharpe brothers at the college.
Looking down on Lucknow in Google Earth I am amazed at how the city has grown. Of course it has been nearly 60 years to the day since I left the college and Lucknow. I remember doing cadet military manoeuvres on the other side of the Goomtie where there were open pastures and orchards, where we went in search of watermelons and the like, breaking bounds after lights out!
I have attached another view of the Martiniere and surrounds. The Dr Bhimrao Abedkar Park and the development just south of the Park are very impressive. The development north of the railway line and south of the Park is not named on Google maps. With the impressive sports pavilion and playing arena it could be a University? I believe the Park has raised a few eyebrows, Particularly the cost of the development.
Anyway if we ever make the trip again it would be a place to visit.
Regards,
Roley.

Sorry for the misunderstanding. I knew there were Sharpe 'brothers' so that it...
Here are some more pics.
The last pic is of the Band Pavilion, behind the washies and the misty road is taken looking back while approaching the Fairydale culvert.

Early sunshine!

Nov 11, 2010.
This morning while the college morning assemble was on I took a stroll to the other side of the Lat. The pics are not as clear as I'd liked them to be. I have the Gomti right behind me in the pic with the iron fence in front.

La Martiniere College lake

Surprise! I still cannot decide whether what's happening to the lake-side of La Martiniere College  is good or bad. It's been out of Mart hands for long yet if we could get the area back in its original form I think we would dither. I visited the bund this afternoon (Nov 9, 2010) after about two weeks and was amazed at the change. I couldn't help telling myself 'It good, it's a good thing' and thinking 'I think it is.' So out came my camera-phone!

Self-imposed curfew

This is what Lucknow's Kiserbagh Circus looked like most of Thursday
The suspense over the Ayodhya case verdict ended Thursday, September 30 afternoon. Though a working day with schools officially open, the roads remained deserted with markets and most offices closed. The court ruled that the land on which the disputed Babri Mosque once stood and the adjoining area would be shared by the three contesting parties. The parties now have the option of approaching the Supreme Court. (Photo courtesy: inext)

The other side

The far side of the lake is being buttressed the same way as the bund, something that should have been done long ago. Anyhow, better late than never! If I'm seeing it right, with the monsoon on now, maybe we will see the Lat surrounded with water even after the river recedes.

Fwd: : OLD FART PRIDE

Subject: Fwd: : OLD FART PRIDE

I'm  passing this on as I did not want to be the only  old fart receiving it. Actually, it's not a bad  thing to be so called, as you will see.
Old Farts are easy to spot at sporting events; during the playing of the Jana Gana Mana, Old Farts remove their caps and stand at attention and sing without embarrassment. They know the words and believe in them.
Old Farts remember World War II, 1948, the Chinese aggression, the '65 war, the '71 war, Yahya Khan and the British tyrants. They remember the Atomic Age, the Jet Age and the Moon Landing.
If you bump into an Old Fart on the sidewalk he will apologize. If you pass an Old Fart on the street, he will nod or tip his cap to a lady. Old Farts trust strangers and are courteous to women.
Old Farts hold the door for the next person and always, when walking, make certain the lady is on the inside for protection.
Old Farts get embarrassed if someone curses in front of women and children and they don't like any filth or  dirty language on TV or in movies.
Old  Farts have moral courage and personal integrity. They seldom brag unless it's about their children or grandchildren.
It's the Old Farts who know our great country is protected, not by politicians, but by the young men in the Armed Forces, serving their country.
This country needs Old Farts with their work ethic, sense of responsibility, pride in their country and  decent values.
We need them now more than ever.
Thank God for Old Farts!

Pass this on to all the Old Farts you know.

I was taught to respect my elders. Now that I'm getting on in age, It's just getting harder to find the Old Farts!!

Fwd: Masie Quieros

June 24, 2010.

Hi Pete,
The pic here was taken perhaps 60 years ago. From left is Masie Quieros, my dads sisters Elsie (James), Ivy (Hourigan) Elsie's daughters Dorothy and in foreground Noreen (Vincent). Her son Maurice, in his 80's left is perhaps the only one living and the little girl, in the shadows left,  must be Maurice's daughter Natice also in the UK. In the centre, the blonde boy, is someone I don't recognise.
Masie was considered my grandmother's adopted daughter, since she lived from time to time with the Shepherd family. Masie was married to a Holmes who treated her very shabbily and the marriage ended early. Maise had a brother in the pre-partition police and his name might have been Alfred. Masie died in New Delhi in the mid-1960's. I guess you wouldn't know where she fits into you family.
I'm sending this  to my blog as well hoping that Maurice in the UK sees the pic and clears the questions in my mind.
George
